Removing Brown Stains From Plaster
Jul 22, 2025Having a pool is a great thing, unless it's stained and ugly. Draining and acid washing a pool can do damage to the surface. It is not always the best choice to remove stains. If you think that your stains look similar to this swimming pool, you can try Super Stain Treat and Stain Treat by United Chemical to remove your stains. This is best done in the spring, and not during the dead of summer because the chlorine will not be easily established for at least a week.
Step 1. Lower the pH to 7.2 using Muriatic Acid
Step 2. Lower the Chlorine to zero using Thiosulfate (Chlorine Neutralizer).
Step 3. Run Pool Pump and Brush Pool
Step 4. Add 2 1/2 lbs of Super Stain Treat per 15,000 gallons of pool water. This product is a very fine dust and will blow weight with the wind, so add it close to the water and all the way around the perimeter, focusing on the heaviest stained areas.
Step 5. Wait 1 Hour and Brush the Entire Pool
Step 6. Wait 3 Days and then add 2 lbs of Stain Treat per 20,000 gallons of pool water.
Step 7. Brush Entire Pool
Step 8. Wait 5 more days and start slowly adding chlorine to the pool to establish a chlorine residual. Be careful not to shock the pool or add too much at one time as you may cause the stains to reappear. It's better to add small amounts daily or every other day until you have a chlorine residual.
Step 9. Raise the pH and Alkalinity to normal ranges.
Step 10. Enjoy your much improved swimming pool, and send me before and after pictures. Lol
